Cheese for the GF Wine Lover

What is wine without cheese? People love to pair wine and cheese; it is the thing to do at a tasting. But if you have Celiac disease or are Gluten Intolerant the process of picking cheese is a pain in the process of drinking and enjoying the wines you love. Let’s start with just a couple of ideas here

If you are a newbie wine taster, you are just like I was a couple of years ago. I didn’t KNOW what cheese to pair with what wine and, of course, cheese isn’t cheap so going at it without a little bit of knowledge can be costly.  Seems the word now is that most wine and cheese pairings are a matter of individual taste. But since many of you are just learning about wine tasting and don’t know where to start, I am passing on some of my favorite cheeses to pair with our Pied Blanc 2009 Chardonnay (or most Chards for that matter.) …Brie, Jarlsberg, Parmigiano (Parmesan), Gruyere.

I was pretty bummed to find that certain cheese, which is made from cows milk might have gluten in it.  The mold for these cheeses may be made by using bread to create the mold. The biggest downer was finding out that some of my favorite veined cheeses like Bleu, Gorgonzola, Roquefort, and Stilton, are not allowed on a GF diet.

But all was not lost, I discovered Goat cheese, also known as soft chevre. It was definitely not in this woman’s menu bank, I’m sure I had never tried it before becoming a wine consultant with Wineshop at Home. Now I pair it with some of our Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc, two very nice white wines; be prepared for a smooth, tangy but special taste.

Must go now and find my favorite goat cheese, always in my refrigerator, and pour a bit of Chenin Blanc in my glass. Please come back and check my future blogs for other wine and cheese pairings to try.

Cheers

Blogging and Wine-ing

I went back to work today…no more holiday decorating or un-decorating, wrapping presents;  cleaning or baking GF cookies, or taking down the tree or some other holiday chore. Just when I really got into going and picking up a book to read for an hour between Face-booking it is time to leave my house and head back to the J-O-B. While there I sat at my desk it was so easy to want to just sit and think of something to write in my blog tonight…well, I could only think that I’d rather be home calling my wine customers, or getting ready for my next wine tasting or wine meeting …anything but being at the office! But although I wanted to be home, I wasn’t and I had a job to do and I did it. I only looked at FB once all day and that was at lunch time..good thing because it isn’t what I get paid for.

The best part of the day was reading the email that came from the Blogging Challenge (BC); I only read one an hour although,  it was hard not to just read them all at once. They were funny, sad, informative, on topic, off topic (a bit like this one) and all had something to say about the writer and what was happening for him or her. I love doing this -I’m having some difficulty thinking of what someone else wants to hear but I know as I do this every day it will be easier; in the meantime I’m going to get a glass of red wine, sit here and read some more of the great blogs that were posted here today. Then its off to another day at the JOB and it starts all over again.

Tomorrow its all about Wine and Cheese. Thanks all your great stories.

Winter Wine Tasting

Happy 2011!

This is the time of year when I really miss having a fireplace…of course, in our area of California you can’t burn wood in the fireplace most of the time anyway but a good gas log would be fine with me. This cold, wet winter is not what I stay in San Jose for.  But I digress; I really wish I had a fireplace so I could sit beside it with my hubby and drink a glass of our wonderful WSAH red wine, sharing New Year’s ideas and expectations after a long day at work. Maybe we’ll  have to invite some friends to join us, even without the fireplace. This wine is too good not to share!

If you have a fireplace, or even if you don’t, January is a great time to invite some good wine loving friends over to enjoy some awesome WineShop wines at a tasting.  We even have a four  bottle sampler if six bottles seems a bit much on a weeknight or so soon after the holidays.  WineTasting with friends in January is a way to keep the good times alive after the holidays; don’t miss the fun. So call me or email me to help you get your tasting hats on, sit by the fire with friends and raise your glasses to the New Year.

Tasting or just drinking

Wow, I’m excited you have found my wine page….I have some simple questions and answers about wine tasting, ..I’m not a sommelier but I’m an active Wine Consultant who enjoys meeting new people at my tastings and chatting about various questions about why we do wine tastings.

Why take the time to taste the wine when you could just slug it or chug it? Why do you want to swirl and sniff before you sip and savor?
This seems like such a simple question but the answer is more complex than the wines we are drinking!  What a waste of the good winemakers efforts. Expensive wine or everyday wines are worth taking the time to slowly sip into your mouth and savor on the tongue and in the mouth. Get the full feel and flavor by sucking in a bit of air with your wine and see how different a wine can taste when you slow it down. Don’t rush it down the throat; take the time to swirl it in your mouth and get the full texture and flavors.

When you are trying new wines only try a one or two whites and one or two reds if you haven’t done tastings before.  It often takes two or three tastes of each before you really know the flavor of each wine so don’t just judge the wine on its first taste, take a couple or three really good tastes and then think about how it tastes.  Between the whites and the reds have a sip of water and a cracker or piece of a baguette to refresh your palate for the reds.  Go slow, enjoy and you’ll be starting on a journey of wine tasting that you can enjoy often.

Wine Tasting

Does wine tasting seem very “out there” and something only for “older people” or “rich people”? That’s kind of what I thought when I was young and had not a clue. But…now that I know how much fun it is, and how good the wine can be, I realize that I was wrong and I’m really happy I was. Wine is naturally gluten free and pairs well with many of my favorite foods, steak, chicken,  fish,  fruits and even chocolate. What’s not to like about that?

Wine tasting is fun, social, and something to share with good friends. Or to share with the couple standing next to you at the “tasting bar”.  I met a really neat couple when wine tasting in Monterey last month; they were both musicians from the SF bay area and  as we tasted and talked, it turned out we had a mutual friend in the music biz.  What a small world,  and all while enjoying our wine tasting and conversation.

Another great thing about wine tasting with me is that the tasting experience includes recipes to pair with each of the wines so you can start right in enjoying food with your wine. If you are going to a tasting and you don’t know the host very well or don’t want to bother him or her; bring your own GF crackers, spread on your choice of cheese, listen to the Wine Consultant or person leading the tasting, relax and have fun.

Wine and GF Crackers

If you are getting ready for a wine tasting or just some sipping snacks that are Gluten Free try some of the Nut Thins crackers, for Red Wines I love the Pecan ones and good Roquefort. I also enjoy the Original Mary’s Gone Crackers, seems to me some of the herb flavors are just too strong for the cheeses and kind of spoil the taste of the wine.  For our White Wines I love the Almond Nut Thins and a creamy Havarti or Camembert spread piled on top.

When you go to a Party….

Going to someone’s home for a party or dinner can be a stressful time for a gluten free person.  When I was first Gluten Free there was very limited knowledge among others about it; at that time not many foods were GF. Now, 8 years later, I take my own food and crackers to a party. I call the hostess ahead and see what I have or can pick up that might fit with the menu. It is much more friendly to just bring a package of Gluten Free Nut Thins or Rice crackers than to have to go without, or worse, whine about not having anything to eat.  If you aren’t that familiar with the host or you are going to a reception or large gathering use a big enough purse that you can easily stash a baggies of crackers; then put them on your plate when you are surfing the buffet and pick out the cheese and veggies or fruit. having my own GF snacks is part of my go to dinner or party routine and when I do my Wine Tasting parties I even bring them so I have something to eat while the wine tasters are snacking.

Be in charge of your own food, it is easier on the others at the party and the hostess; she doesn’t have to worry about getting the right thing. You always have something to eat!
